What is the TechHive internship?
TechHive is a design studio at the Lawrence Hall of Science. We make interactive exhibits, events and classes that teach the public about science and technology. In the internship program, high school students work alongside museum staff to create projects for the museum and our community partners.
The internship runs all day on Saturdays for 10 weeks. During the first half of the program, interns will be trained through hands-on workshops. They will learn about:
Computer programming and electronics
Physical prototyping and mechanical design
How to document projects using photographs, video and online portfolios
Interns will spend the last weeks of the program working in teams to complete a final design project. These projects will be part of an an exhibit or event for the public. You can check out some of TechHive's completed projects on the Our Work page.
The TechHive is modeled after industry internships, where teens apprentice under experienced staff from the museum. Interns are expected to conduct themselves professionally, but being creative and having fun are part of the job! Each intern will leave TechHive with work experience, an online portfolio of design projects, lots of new skills and lots of new friends.
How many hours is it?
TechHive Internships run for 10 Saturdays between 10:00am and 4:30pm at the Lawrence Hall of Science. We will also invite interns to volunteer at or attend special events.
We hope that students will attend all 10 sessions, and we require them to attend at least 8 of the 10 sessions in order to complete the internship.
Interns are eligible to receive community service hours or hours towards their International Baccalaureate (IB) program.
What does it cost me to join?
The program is offered free to everyone who applies and is accepted. We strongly believe in equal opportunity and strive to keep barriers to participation as low as possible.
