Description:
Provides two or seven month internships for low-income and youth of color ages 15-19 years old, the majority of whom live in subsidized housing
BEETS is an opportunity for youth to earn a stipend as they learn, experience nature, explore issues of food equity and environmental justice, and increase their personal well-being and that of their own neighborhood and community. The stipend is a key incentive in reaching underserved youth who would not have participated otherwise.
Offers youth an opportunity to gain experience in designing, building and maintaining gardens and in teaching garden classes to younger children
Takes youth on field trips to job training and career development workshops
Since 2008, nearly 200 teens from low-income backgrounds have graduated from BEETS, and 85% went on to graduate from high school, enroll in college, or secured employment and internships. BEETS alumni have attended Columbia University, Langston University, Skyline College, and City College of San Francisco, and have secured jobs and internships at over a dozen companies and organizations, including CommunityGrows
